Building Skills while Having Fun!

When children play they are grabbing, dropping, looking, hiding, building up, knocking down and so much more.  All of these actions help children learn to problem solve, test their ideas, communicate and interact with the people and things in their world.

How we play is also important.  Free and improvised play encourages a critical skill called executive function.  This skill includes the ability to self-regulate (among other abilities), which helps kids control emotions and behavior and exert self-control. Good executive function has been found to be a better predictor of school success than even IQ.

During free and creative play , children talk to themselves about what they are doing to do and how they are going to do it.   As adults we continue to use this self-regulating language (called private speech) to master skills, manage emotions and overcome obstacles.

In today’s world where we’re bombarded with commercialization, children’s toys have become more and more specifically designed to encourage re-enactments of characters and shows.  We’ve also created secure and controlled play environments (gymnastics, karate classes, etc) to deal with the increasing concerns of parents about safety.   These two changes in play over time have lead psychologists to see an change in kids’ cognitive and emotional development.

We need to encourage children to create their own make-believe worlds again.
